Stabilization Platform for In-Motion Array Application

Phased Arrays are electronically steered. They therefore do not require mechanical steering in azimuth or elevation.* This eliminates mechanical steering, but in applications subject to pitch, yaw, roll, etc., such motion may make a true array unable to see the desired satellite(s).

A rough prototype was successfully created of a modified double-gimbal stabilization platform. The unique design eliminates any obstruction from the outer gimbal at full 40 degrees pitch and centers the mass for optimal inertial control under accelerations in 360 degrees.

A second prototype will be constructed from durable plastic and will have a more advanced control system. This second stabilization platform prototype will weigh roughly 15 lbs (for 60cm array).

*Hybrid or certain 1D arrays may prove more cost efficient in some applications. The stabilization platform will have an alternative control unit that will allow it to be used to track fixed or moving satellites, from either fixed or moving platforms.
